The Albuquerque stories are titled "Rooted" to express how Indigenous people pull from tradition to make something better for today. Each business was started to address a community need, from providing locally-grown food to creating representation in media and art. By supporting their people, these Indigenous entrepreneurs drive the progress they set out to achieve.

Created in October 2020 in the wake of Ahmaud Arbery's murder while running, the Running Industry Diversity Coalition (RIDC) was formed to address systemic racism in the running industry. The coalition is united by the belief that running, walking, and fitness support a healthy culture, and should be accessible for everyone — regardless of race, religion, gender identity, sexuality, immigration status, socioeconomic status, and ability. As the trial of Ahmaud Arbery’s killers continues, we are honored to share the voices of the RIDC’s co-chairs, Alison Mariella Désir and Chris Lampen-Crowell, as they tell the story of the coalition’s challenge in its early days, and their hopes for the future of running.

As World War Two was ending, the growing nuclear arms race put the US in need of uranium. It turned to Navajo Nation, where the uranium mining industry thrived for four decades -- but left disease, pollution and the biggest radioactive spill in US history.
That spill in Church Rock, New Mexico upended the lives of nearby residents, who had to grapple with toxic water, livestock and a lifetime of illnesses. Now, they are still waiting for it to be cleaned up.

Dancing an Indigenous Future with Albuquerque's Native American Hip-Hop Scene | KQED Arts
Albuquerque’s thriving hip-hop and freestyle dance scene is influenced by Indigenous dancers from many tribes, Pueblos and other communities. A strong sense of solidarity holds it all together, say dancers Anne Pesata (Jicarilla Apache) and Raven Bright (Diné). The couple describes the scene as “Indigenous futurism.” Meet Randy L. Barton, or Randy Boogie, a dancer, DJ and artist (Navajo) who created The Sacred Cypher, an event that highlights how Indigenous art forms connect with hip-hop.
